History of the USAT Liberty Shipwreck
The USAT Liberty was originally a United States Army cargo ship built during World War I. Launched in 1918 by the Federal Shipbuilding Company in Kearny, New Jersey, it served during the war transporting horses and cargo to France. Following its service in World War I, the Liberty returned to commercial operations but faced a series of incidents, including collisions with other vessels.
During World War II, the USAT Liberty transported rubber and railway parts from Australia to the Philippines. Unfortunately, on January 11, 1942, the ship was attacked by the Japanese submarine I-66 near the Lombok Strait when they torpedoed the ship. Officials tried to tow the damaged vessel, but ultimately it was decided that beaching the boat would be the best course of action. This ensured the ship’s cargo could be salvaged safely. In 1963, tremors from the Mount Agung eruption shifted the wreck off the beach into the sea, creating the dive site we know today.
