Bali’s charm isn’t just limited to its underwater marvels—the island is a global magnet for travelers. In 2024, Bali welcomed approximately 6 million international visitors,  showcasing its allure as a top travel destination.  Likely found among these travelers are ocean lovers, who are attracted to the island for what surrounds it.  Some come for a scuba adventure while many others enjoy floating on top of the ocean for a glimmer of what is beneath. Here we provide all the best spots to snorkel around the island, best time to visit and where you will have the best luck at spotting some underwater favorites.

Where is the Best Place to Snorkel in Bali?

Bali is not just a paradise above water but also a spectacular world beneath the waves. Nearly every edge of the island has a snorkel spot to enjoy.  From the vibrant coral reefs of Amed in the east to the clear waters of Menjangan Island in the northwest,  there are countless spots to explore. It’s hard to say what might be the best snorkeling spot in Bali because each location will provide something a bit different. If you’re interested in specific ocean life that could take you to the Gilli’s or Nusa Penida. If you enjoy a chill entry without having to get on a boat, that will take you somewhere else. Below is a list of some of our favorites.

Tulamben:

Personally if you are going to enjoy Bali and want to take advantage of what it has to offer I would head to Tulamben. The shipwreck is accessible to snorkelers which isn’t always possible with wreck spots.  You can get a nice view from above of the intricacies of the boat and all the ocean life that it houses.

Sanur

The reef is home for lionfish of all sizes, big pufferfish, clownfish and small barracudas. There are moray eels, sea snakes and shoals of batfish. If you are lucky, you may find a hidden scorpion fish or octopus and small shrimps. Along the reef, steel structures form like pyramids to create an artificial reef where corals are growing on and fish are living in.

Nusa penida

Nusa Penida is one of the most amazing snorkel locations in the whole of Bali, Indonesia. For snorkeling you have the chance to witness Manta Rays, and Mola Mola on the same day. The beautiful colourful tops are reefs full of hard corals, coral bommies and reef fish. The top reef slopes down and is a wall with sea fans and great for seeing turtles.

Best Months to Snorkel in Bali?

Timing your snorkeling trip is key to experiencing the best visibility and comfortable water temperatures. Luckily the best months to snorkel in Bali are generally during the best times to visit, which is the dry season from April to October. The seas are calmer, and the visibility is at its peak, offering a clearer view of the underwater world.

Where is the Best Place to Snorkel with Turtles in Bali?

One of the most enchanting experiences is snorkeling with the gentle sea turtles. Head over to the Gili Islands, where you can often spot these majestic creatures roaming freely. The best practice while snorkeling with ocean life is to keep a respectful distance and observe but never touch. Turtles are often just a short distance off the beach. Easily accessible to snorkelers who want to discover what the ocean has to offer but prefer an easy entry.

Can You Snorkel with Manta Rays in Bali?

Nusa Penida is your go to place for snorkeling with Mantas in Bali. Manta rays are known for their impressive size yet peaceful nature, making them a favorite among snorkelers. They are not dangerous or aggressive which allows for a stress free snorkel.  Don’t forget to always maintain a safe distance and avoid disturbing their natural behaviors.

What Gear Do You Need to Snorkel?

Having the right gear and being well-prepared before you hit the water will make your experience that much more memorable. Nothing is worse than a leaky rental mask! Most snorkel trip operators are good at providing proper, functional equipment. Make sure you give your rental equipment a good check before using it.  First you’ll want to ensure you have a well-fitting snorkel mask—test its seal by trying it on without the strap and taking a gentle breath to check for leaks. Pair this with a snorkel that’s designed to minimize water entry. A dependable pair of fins is also important; they not only enhance your propulsion through the water but also help reduce fatigue during long snorkeling sessions. After sorting your essentials you’ll want to ensure you have reef-safe sunscreen and are wearing a hat or rash guard, which also guards against potential stings. Lastly, don’t forget to pack a lightweight dry bag, towel and your  favorite pair of sunnies!
