Nusa Lembongan is a smaller island off the coast of the more well known,  Nusa Penida. Channels run between Lembongan, Penida, and Ceningan causing strong currents, but also providing a rich ecosystem for marine life. In fact Nusa Lembongan and surrounding islands are situated in waters home to the coral triangle, the epicenter of marine biodiversity, making it even more of an attraction to snorkelers and divers.

Most snorkeling trips in Nusa Lembongan will visit sites off of Lembongan as well as Penida. Although they are separate islands, for the purpose of snorkeling tours you will typically see guides offering trips to both. The exact sites you will go to will depend on the trip you chose, your swimming abilities, and whether or not you have diving friends you will be tagging along with! You can find snorkeling trips directly on the island or you can access them by hopping on a dive trip heading out of Sanur. Top Snorkeling Spots to Explore Around Nusa Lembongan

Mangrove Point

Located on the northeast coast of Nusa Lembongan, Mangrove Point offers an exciting drift snorkeling experience. Here, gentle currents carry you over thriving coral reefs teeming with tropical fish. It’s a relaxing yet exhilarating way to explore the underwater beauty of Lembongan. Keep an eye out for turtles! The site is best visited with a group, as currents can be stronger than you may expect. It’s worth joining a group to ensure safety and help get the most out of your trip.

Manta Point

For a great chance of spotting manta rays, head to Manta Point, located off the southern coast of nearby Nusa Penida. The boat ride to Manta Point is a part of the whole experience. On your way there you can be sure to catch stunning views of the cliffs before arriving. The combination of clear waters, vibrant marine life, and frequent manta encounters make this a must-visit spot. Often the Mantas make their way closer to the surface making them easy to see and that much more epic as you get an up close and personal view.

Crystal Bay

True to its name, Crystal Bay boasts crystal-clear waters, making it perfect for observing marine life and coral formations. Home to everything from vibrant reef fish to the elusive mola-mola (ocean sunfish), Crystal Bay is ideal for snorkelers of all skill levels. Calm waters make it especially beginner-friendly. You can expect to see turtles, tropical fish species and maybe–just maybe– a manta. Typically mola mola that are in the area are found much deeper than snorkeling can access, but if you’re lucky you might catch one making its way up to check out the scenery.

The North Coast of Nusa Penida

The north coast offers more drift snorkeling experiences. Again this is another place where a guide is a must. Mild to moderate currents sweep you along sloping coral reefs filled with tropical fish and colorful coral formations. Drift diving and snorkeling is pretty fun. Totally worth it to check out, should you be up for the adventure.

What to Bring on the Boat

Preparation is key! Don’t forget to get all your ducks (or fish) in a row, before you head out. Here’s what you’ll need to pack:

  • Snorkeling gear: While most tours provide equipment, bringing your own ensures a good fit. We have great blogs on choosing the right mask and fins if you’re interested in checking them out. Having the right gear allows you to actually enjoy your snorkel trip and not waste time battling a foggy mask or loose fins.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: Protect your skin and the marine environment.
  • Towels and extra clothes: Dry off and stay comfortable after your swim. Some guides will provide towels, ask before you go.
  • Water and snacks: Keep hydrated and energized during your adventure. If you join a dive trip you will probably get lucky and get to snag some snacks. If you are going with a snorkeling tip only things might be different. Bringing water is never a bad idea. Stay hydrated kids! And adults, we also care about you guys too!
  • Seasickness medication: If you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s better to come prepared.
  • Waterproof camera: Capture the beauty of the underwater world without worrying about your gear getting wet.
  • Eco-friendly bag for trash: Help keep the ocean clean by collecting any rubbish you might see. It’s super easy to either keep the bag around your wrist or alternatively sometimes life vests will come with pockets.
  • Rash guard: The sun can be so strong while snorkeling. Protect your skin with a rash guard to avoid a toasted back. Don’t forget about your legs! Make sure you lather them up or grab yourself some board shorts.
